Let's talk about June Pride month!

This Pride month we invited The Coming Out Coaches to write a guest blog article about Pride month and how they support the LGBTQIA+ community internationally.

When we talk about Pride and LGBTQIA+ topics, it goes so much more beyond sexual orientations and gender identities. It is about humans having the right to live a life being true to themselves. There is no right or wrong way of being as there is no right or wrong way of loving! Wouldn't you agree? (Of course, it goes without saying that all these aspects concern mutually consented adults)

Since 1999, June has been declared the Pride month! This is the period of the year where LGBTQIA+ awareness is fully increased in many parts of the globe, and rainbows are waving and sparking joy everywhere! It's a period of celebration, a period of expression, and a period of allowing ourselves to be true to ourselves, released from judgment - at least, that is the optimal goal.

It is also that time of the year to remember how everything started and to be aware that some brave individuals fought before us so we can today have the privilege to celebrate who we are while waving colourful flags.

Background

It all started with the Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969. The police invaded the Stonewall Inn, a bar located in New York City's Greenwich Village that served as a haven for the city's gay, lesbian and transgender community. The majority of the patrons at Stonewall were either drag queens or gay men of colour.

To honour the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, we celebrate each year during June the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Pride month!

The Stonewall Riots launched a considerable increase in LGBTQ activism.

In 2015, the Stonewall Inn was declared a historic landmark and one year later was named a national monument.

However, 2020 has been the deadliest year on record, with the number of transgender individuals killed rising to 45 in the US alone. A number that almost doubled from 26 in both 2018 and 2019. And for 2021, there have already been 15 cases of deaths.

Between October 1, 2019, and September 30, 2020, 350 transgender individuals were reported dead worldwide. They are burned alive, suffocated, and murdered. Many hate crimes and murders are often hidden, so the number of deaths remains unclear.

Still today, 70 countries in the world criminalise LGBT+ sexual acts between adults and 11 countries impose the death penalty.

On a more light note coming to Europe, 31 out of 50 countries and 23 out of 27 member States of the European Union recognise some type of same-sex union.

This journey of supporting others is challenging, unpredictable, scary and also incredibly fulfilling and magical. We are grateful to each other for daring to get out of our comfort zones, playing full out and risking failing so we can support others be proud and happy about who they are – not someday, but starting today and for everyday!”
